Get to Know the People on Preston

Lori Mellor

“This is the most exciting career I never knew existed. It combines so many different skill sets. I came from office furniture sales, then I went into marketing and communications in a high tech company in Toronto. I owned an Amazon rubber business, which worked with tribes in the rainforests of Brazil to bring their rubber textiles to market. I come from entrepreneurial parents; my mother owned a restaurant and my father had a PR firm. My mother was living with me in Toronto helping me raise my daughter and she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She said, ‘I want to go home to Ottawa.’ So we pulled up stakes. She was given nine months and that’s what she got so I spent that time getting all the time with her I could. Once she passed it was time to get out and find some work. I knew Peter Harris, who was the previous executive director of the BIA. I ran into him and said ‘I’m looking to hang my shingle.’ He said, ‘I might have something for you.’ He was busy with another business, so I started on a half-time basis.”
